Sestiere of Cannaregio
Discover Cannaregio, the quietest
and most relaxing neighborhood in Venice
Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six historic districts, called Sestieri, of Venice and one of the most popular residential areas for the Venetians. Lesser known but no less fascinating, it is full of quiet, secluded views overlooking the Lagoon, Gothic and Renaissance churches and a very lively city life. Wide sidewalks called fondamenta stretch along parallel canals, connected by a mercifully regular grid of streets and bridges. By day, the neighborhood offers a relaxing place to soak up the sun and sky. In the evening cafés, typical bars called bacàri, and restaurants open and you can enjoy an aperitif or try the classic Venetian cichéto overlooking the canal full of moored boats.
A bustling high street, the Strada Nova, runs along the bottom of Cannaregio just north of the Grand Canal and it was laid out in the 19th Century to provide easy access from the train station of Santa Lucia to the Rialto Bridge.
The Jewish quarter (known as the Jewish Ghetto) is also an interesting place to visit. Here you will find the Campo del Ghetto Nuovo with its old synagogues, art galleries and the Jewish historical museum. The most important monuments include the Church of Madonna dell’Orto an example of Gothic-Venetian architecture that contains paintings by Tintoretto.
Another church not to be missed is Santa Maria dei Miracoli, a Renaissance style building with a beautiful view of a small canal. Inside, it houses the famous painting of the Madonna dei Miracoli. The Grand Canal on the other hand, is overlooked by Ca’ d’Oro, a well-known Venetian palace which today is home to the Franchetti Gallery.
